Early Childhood Education and Color

Early Childhood Education and Color | (480) 267-9419

Part three of a three part series explores early childhood development and the effective use of color. Color is an important part of our lives. It can be a warning that food is unsafe if it has blue spots on it, or color can improve the aesthetics of our homes or offices. Interior design people use color a lot as do landscapers.

Another Reason Preschools Use Colors

There are even more areas of life that use color from preschool on up as this article excerpt from the site Color Matters shows:

If a picture is worth a thousand words, a picture with natural colors may be worth a million, memory-wise. Psychologists have documented that “living color” does more than appeal to the senses. It also boosts memory for scenes in the natural world. By hanging an extra “tag” of data on visual scenes, color helps us to process and store images more efficiently than colorless (black and white) scenes, and as a result to remember them better, too. [READ MORE] Even modeling clay isn’t just gray or white, it comes in a lot of colors. Like modeling clay, children can be shaped. How a daycare center shapes children is a reflection on us, so we believe in shaping them the right way.

Color Recognition and Daycare

A good daycare center is more than a place to drop off your kids at while you’re at work. A good daycare center subtly teaches your children vital skills such as color recognition and socialization.

Both skills serve vital purposes, and help children become productive members of society. So next time you see a brightly colored child’s drawing, be glad. They are starting to develop.

Helping your children develop is all about the choices you make as a parent. Teach them values such as honesty and compassion. Make sure they eat their vegetables and get to bed on time. And help them to grow in another way: get them in the right preschool.

Color Recognition:  Why It Matters

Color Recognition in Your Gilbert Preschool

As any decent Gilbert preschool knows, recognizing colors is very important.  The ability to differentiate between red and yellow will help a child recognize important information like traffic signals.

Color recognition is also important for problem solving ability.  Having a child point out the different colors also helps them to get inroads into recognizing other things too such as shapes and patterns. Learning this at the daycare level can help your child be ready for school in just a few short years. However, color serves other purposes as well.

Color Recognition: Child Development and Expression

With childhood development there is also another use for color:  expression.  Finger paint for example can help a child develop their creative side, and also show your childhood how color can convey emotion.

People that don’t know about preschool don’t realize that about finger painting.  It’s nothing to do with being messy, it’s about expression.  Here is a good article excerpt about color use from Purdue University:

Children and adults learn that they can use colors to tell others how they feel. For example, it means one thing to wear all black. It usually means something else to wear a bright, flowery shirt. Some messages are communicated with colors on TV, in movies, and in other forms of media. In some classes at school and in some jobs, colors are very important. People who are in interior design, landscaping, and historical restoration need to know a lot about colors.[READ MORE] Being in the preschool business, we are well aware of how much color can help your kids learn and grow.

Color and Your Daycare Center

Have you ever wondered why most fast food places have orange, red, or yellow in their logos? It is because those colors stimulate hunger responses.  Why do actors get in and out of character in a green room?  Because the shade of green in a green room is relaxing, and if one uses a green room appropriately, it can help one to center.  People don’t realize how much of an effect color has on us from a daycare center all the way up to the end of our lives, as this article from Purdue University shows:

Recognizing colors is an important skill. People often use colors to describe things. For example, a person who is giving directions might say, “Turn left past the green house.” Traffic signs are color-coded. Blue signs give information to travelers about gas, lodging, and phones. Brown signs tell about national parks and other vistas. Street names are on green signs. People also need to understand how colors go together.  [READ MORE] A good pre-school will recognize the importance of color recognition and teach children accordingly.

Daycare Centers and Color Recognition

As for daycare centers, color recognition is one of the reasons why such places are decorated with a lot of color.  There is also another reason as well.  These colors help with intellectual development.  Your child’s formative years are some of the most important in their lives.  It has been pretty well proven that color stimulates intellectual development in children.

Helping your child develop is a key mission of ours.  But then it is part of who we are.  We are your daycare center in Mesa, Arizona.

Education and Childcare

Posted on February 7, 2013 by Kristie

Education doesn’t start in kindergarten, it begins earlier than that: in preschool.

A kindergarten (from German About this sound Kindergarten (help·info), literally “children’s garden”) is a preschool educational institution for children. The term was created by Friedrich Fröbel for the play and activity institute that he created in 1837 in Bad Blankenburg as a social experience for children for their transition from home to school. His goal was that children should be taken care of and nourished in “children’s gardens” like plants in a garden.

The term kindergarten is used around the world to describe a variety of different institutions that have been developed for children ranging from the ages of two to seven, depending on the country concerned. Many of the activities developed by Fröbel are also used around the world under other names. Singing and growing plants have become an integral part of lifelong learning. Playing, activities, experience, and social interaction are now widely accepted as essential aspects of developing skills and knowledge.

If you have a child, it’s important to begin their education as quickly as possible, to help them when they eventually do reach kindergarten, and all the levels beyond that.  A good preschool is a great place to start.

Socialization and Early Childhood Education

Socialization is vital in order for children to fit into society.  According to this WIKIPEDIA excerpt:

Socialization (or socialisation) is a term used by sociologists, social psychologists, anthropologists, political scientists and educationalists to refer to the lifelong process of inheriting and disseminating norms, customs and ideologies, providing an individual with the skills and habits necessary for participating within his or her own society. Socialization is thus ‘the means by which social and cultural continuity are attained’.[1][2]

Socialization describes a process which may lead to desirable, or ‘moral’, outcomes. Individual views on certain issues, such as race or economics, may be socialized (and to that extent normalized) within a society. Many socio-political theories postulate that socialization provides only a partial explanation for human beliefs and behaviors, maintaining that agents are not ‘blank slates’ predetermined by their environment.

A daycare center is more than just a babysitting service, it also helps to fulfill the need for one of the most important times of a child’s life:  early childhood.  Lucy Sprague Mitchell among other pioneers knew this.

According to this Wikipedia excerpt:

Early childhood education (also early childhood learning and early education) refers to the formal teaching of young children by people outside the family or in settings outside the home. “Early childhood” is usually defined as before the age of normal schooling – five years in most nations, though the U.S. National Association for the Education of Young Children defines “early childhood” as before the age of eight.

Childhood education often focuses on children learning through play, based on the research and philosophy of Jean Piaget. This belief is centered on the “power of play”. It has been thought that children learn more efficiently and gain more knowledge through play-based activities such as dramatic play, art, and social games. This theory plays stems children’s natural curiosity and tendencies to “make believe”, mixing in educational lessons.[1]

Preschool education and kindergarten emphasize learning around the ages of 3–6 years. The terms “day care” and “child care” do not convey the educational aspects, although many childcare centers are now using more educational approaches.[citation needed] The distinction between childcare centers and kindergartens has all but disappeared in countries that require staff in different early childhood facilities to have a teaching qualification.

Part of early childhood education is pre school, because it teaches valuable lessons in socialization, and establishes boundaries that a child will not be able to function properly without.  Boundaries are important in play, work, school, and so much more.

A good facility will know about the importance of a multi-faceted program.  Be sure to check the accreditation of any center you’re looking at.  They should have ties to the State.  Then it’s merely a matter of the right daycare center for you and your children.
